The Full Touring Specification
A top box, a passenger backrest, a taller screen and a softer setup. The GTL is the version BMW built for two people and three weeks.
Three Hundred and Fifty Kilograms
Wet, before luggage or a passenger. The K1600 GTL is enormous and it carries the weight so low that it disappears above walking pace.
Vapour on That Scale
A twenty-six litre tank parked in the sun produces a great deal for the carbon to absorb, and the canister has not been sized generously.
Brimmed at Every Stop
Touring riders fill completely whenever they can, which is exactly the behaviour that forces liquid fuel into the bed and finishes it permanently.
Hard Starting, Far Away
The usual symptom of a saturated canister, and on a motorcycle bought for long journeys it happens where dealers are scarce.
The Tank Side of the Job
One line stays and gets a proper termination. Everything else on the vapour side leaves with the canister.
A Fault That Would Not Clear
Left open, the circuit produces a warning that returns after every reset. Closing it properly is the only thing that ends it.
Six Cylinders in a Row
Narrower than most inline fours because BMW made the bores small and the engine short. It is the smoothest motorcycle engine anybody sells.
Back to Standard in an Evening
The refit takes about as long as the removal did, and no replacement parts are needed to do it.
Road Legality
Where the system belongs to the type approval, taking it off ends road legality until it is refitted.
An Electrically Adjustable Screen
Raised and lowered from a thumbwheel while moving, over a range wide enough to matter rather than as a token gesture. On a motorcycle covering six hundred kilometres in a day it is the control the rider touches most often after the throttle.
