Two different ratings are being confused. A chassis is rated for terrain — what it can be ridden over without damage. A filter is rated for air — what it can take out of the atmosphere the engine is breathing. Those are not the same capability and they do not reliably occur together: an adventure bike crossing a clean alpine pass meets easier air than a Tiger Sport 660 that spends a summer idling through roadworks and gravel car parks. The SM223T12, a dry polyester non-woven at 7 µm passing 560 l/m²/sec, is specified for the air. That is the only question it answers.

Key Features

Dry polyester non-woven at 7 µm — the finest medium in the Sprint Filter range

Rated 560 l/m²/sec, the lowest flow figure offered and the cost of that fineness

Listed by the manufacturer for extreme conditions: sand, standing dust, unsealed surfaces

Dry from the box and dry after every wash; no oil to be drawn into the intake

About twice the filtering surface of other performance filters, with the airbox left alone

Replaces the paper panel directly, without modification or remapping; two-year warranty

Reading the two ratings apart

Ask what your riding does to the air rather than what it does to the suspension. A commuter that follows a gritting lorry all winter, a bike parked at a building site, a summer of harvest traffic on valley roads, a fortnight of resurfacing on the daily route — none of that needs knobbly tyres, and all of it puts a load through the intake that a road-and-track medium was not drawn for. Conversely, a well-surfaced alpine tour is easy air, whatever the bike's badge suggests.

What 560 l/m²/sec costs

It costs flow, openly and by design. A finer structure retains more and passes less; the two move together in every medium in the range, so the choice is a trade and not a ranking. Fitted to a Tiger Sport 660 the T12 carries that cost through every clean kilometre as well as the dirty ones. And it does not add anything at the other end: a drop-in element does not make a series motorcycle noticeably stronger. The benefit is an intake resistance you can return to a known value, and a part you clean instead of replace.

Care and cleaning

Clean the SM223T12 with compressed air on the clean side, blown outwards so the deposit leaves by the face that collected it. After a genuinely dirty trip, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Dry it in open air only — never with heat and never over a flame — and refit it dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.

Fitment & Compatibility

Made for the Triumph Tiger Sport 660 of 2022 to 2026. The Trident 660 shares this airbox and the standard element, but Sprint Filter lists the T12 for the Tiger Sport only — one machine on this part number.
