The R nineT was a deliberate step backwards. It appeared in 2014, a year after BMW moved its flagship boxer to liquid cooling, and kept the air- and oil-cooled engine the rest of the range was leaving behind. The consequence sits in the parts catalogue: the oldest machines this element serves left the factory nearly a decade before the R nineT existed — an R 1200 ST from 2005, an HP2 Enduro from 2006. Sprint Filter's PM109S is the dry, washable panel for that older intake, and the R nineT is the newest motorcycle on its list rather than the first.
Key Features
- One woven layer of polyester, supplied dry and kept dry — no oil when new, none after a wash
- P08 medium: apertures of 80 µm rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec, the specification for road and track
- Threads from ø 22 microns across; what does the filtering is the gap they leave, not the fibre
- Roughly twice the filtering cloth of other performance elements, carried in the original frame
- Goes into the standard airbox where the paper panel came out — nothing cut, no remap needed
- Washed and refitted for as long as the machine runs, with two years of warranty from purchase
A part number older than the motorcycle
Fifteen machines sit on this element, covering two decades of Munich boxers: the HP2 models, the R 1200 S, ST, R and RT, the air-cooled GS and its Adventure, then the R nineT family down to a Scrambler still in production in 2024. Nothing links them but the box the filter seals into — a reassuring shape for a supply chain, since the panel is tied to no single model's production run.
What dry is worth on this engine
Running the medium dry is not just one less job. An oiled cotton filter depends on a film sitting on its fibres, and a film upstream of the throttle bodies has somewhere to go; the P08 has nothing on it to move. Nor does that cost retention: Sprint Filter's own comparison puts the dry P08 at 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles against 76.42 per cent for four-layer oiled cotton. It will not make a standard R nineT stronger — a panel inside the standard box cannot. What it changes is that intake resistance comes back down at every clean, rather than climbing until the paper goes in the bin.
Care and cleaning
Service the PM109S with an air line: nozzle to the clean face, blowing outward, until the weave runs clear. When more than dust has collected, wash it in hand-warm water with a little mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clean. Then dry it in moving air and nothing else — no heat gun, no radiator, no flame, since heat is what destroys polyester — and refit it dry. The maintenance sheet is filed under Downloads.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW R nineT built from 2014 to 2016, as a direct replacement inside the standard airbox. Fifteen machines share the part number, and one line of that list deserves a second reading: the GS models named on it are the air-cooled boxers built up to 2012, not the liquid-cooled GS introduced for 2013, which uses a different airbox and a different element. Model years are set out in the Fitment tab.
