Function
At 8 mm, 22 mm, 0.25 mm it fits one position only; the next size up carries a different number. Two shims of the same thickness but different diameter give completely different damping. Öhlins holds thickness to hundredths of a millimetre because that is the resolution damping changes at. A coned or marked shim is finished — it no longer seals against its neighbour.

The tolerances here are the ones the unit was assembled to, not a pattern equivalent's interpretation of them. An original part keeps the unit within its published specification; a near-equivalent quietly moves it. We can supply the whole position from the drawing rather than the single piece if that is easier. Öhlins parts are unit-specific: a close dimension is not a substitute.
How to Be Sure It Fits
The reliable route is the exploded drawing: find the position, read the number, order it — 00187-22 in this case. Check inner diameter 8 mm, outer diameter 22 mm, thickness 0.25 mm against what you have removed; a close size is not the same part. A shim is a thin, ground steel washer, and the stack of them is what generates damping. A worn or bent shim shows up as damping that has quietly drifted from the setting sheet.
