DescriptionThe whole story▼

The California 1400 Touring was built for long trips, with a windscreen, panniers and room for a passenger, and with a passenger on board every stop is shared. A sudden bite at the front makes helmets knock together; a smooth one goes almost unnoticed. The Accossato EDF023 is a brake lever for the California Touring ABS 1400 from 2014 to 2020: an anodised aluminium lever that works with the master cylinder Moto Guzzi fitted, with a reach you set to your own hand.

Key Features

  • Front brake lever for the Moto Guzzi California Touring ABS 1400, 2014 to 2020
  • Attaches to the original master cylinder
  • Reach to the grip adjustable
  • Standard blade approximately 138 mm in all seven colours
  • Long blade in blue, gold, green and orange; short in five colours
  • Machined aluminium, anodised, black hub
  • Rigid construction without a folding joint
  • No German ABE documented; for track use

Construction and Material Quality

The EDF023 is milled on CNC machines from solid aluminium, which gives the lever a precise form and a uniform blade section. Anodising then hardens and colours the surface, black at the hub and your chosen colour along the blade. Pivot and adjuster sit in the hub; the rest of the lever is a single fixed blade, with no joint to introduce slack. A lever without slack lets the start of its travel be felt clearly, and on a loaded touring bike that first part of the travel decides whether a stop is smooth.

Braking With a Passenger

A passenger cannot see the traffic ahead and cannot brace in advance, so every change in speed reaches them by surprise. With a pillion on the California 1400 Touring, the aim is to shape the deceleration: take up the lever's free travel, let the pads touch, then build pressure over a second or so, and ease off gently just before the bike comes to rest so the fork does not spring back. Look far ahead and brake earlier than you would alone, because the extra load lengthens the stopping distance. Two-up riding asks for a steady hand more than a strong one, and that is where lever position helps: set the EDF023 so it sits under relaxed fingers, and the gentle opening phase of each stop becomes easy to repeat. A short briefing before the trip is worthwhile too: the passenger should keep their weight on the footrests and hold the grab rail or your waist rather than pushing against your back.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists two Touring versions for the EDF023: California 1400 Touring for 2014 to 2020 and California 1400 Touring SE for 2015 and 2016. The lever goes on the Touring's original front master cylinder. On the clutch side, Accossato's ESC023 is listed for this bike from 2014 to 2021, one model year longer than the brake lever. Blue, gold, green and orange blades exist in every length, silver in standard and short, black and red in standard only.

Road Approval

This lever has no documented German ABE. We therefore offer it for track use.
