Most of the dust a Kawasaki Ninja 400 breathes is not thrown up by the road. It is produced by the traffic in front of it — brake pads, tyres and clutches wearing away in the same lane, continuously, at the height a motorcycle's intake works in. It is a fine, largely mineral load, it does not settle for long in moving traffic, and it is well below the size a coarse weave is built to stop. That is the case for the Sprint Filter P14 PM164P14 on a bike that spends its life in a commuting queue: a dry non-woven medium filtering to 14 microns instead of the 80 microns of the standard P08.
Key Features
- A direct replacement in the standard airbox — no modification, no remap
- 14 micron filtration, at an air flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Dry non-woven, never oiled, so nothing travels downstream onto the sensors
- Roughly double the filtering surface other performance filters manage
- Washable and reusable — a compressor is the only tool the service needs
- A two-year warranty, on a part designed to last the life of the motorcycle
The load that never shows up as dirt
Road grit and insects announce themselves — they are visible on the element and they are caught by anything. Traffic particulate does neither. It accumulates evenly, slowly and without ever making the filter look dirty enough to act on, which is why the intake on a heavily commuted bike is usually in worse condition than its owner assumes.
The most modified small bike, and the part that stays standard
The Ninja 400 has one of the busiest aftermarkets of any recent motorcycle, and much of it involves opening the intake up. This element goes the other way, and does so entirely inside the standard airbox: nothing is declared, nothing is remapped, and the change can be reversed in an afternoon. For an owner who wants better filtration rather than more noise, the PM164P14 is the version of that decision that leaves the motorcycle exactly as the paperwork describes it. It should be said clearly that it does not add power in return. A standard 399 cc twin is not restricted by its filter, and the P14 in particular trades air for fineness — 1,800 l/m²/sec against the 5,050 of the standard P08. What it offers is a finer barrier and an intake restriction that does not creep upwards between services.
Care and cleaning
Traffic loads an element steadily rather than visibly, which is an argument for blowing the PM164P14 through more often than it looks to need: compressed air from the clean side, working outwards, then back in dry. When commuting has earned it, lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a rinse until the water runs clear resets it properly. It then dries fully in air; heat and flame are both out. Nothing is oiled at any stage. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Both designations, Ninja 400 and EX 400, describe the same machine and take the same element. Made for the Kawasaki Ninja 400 and EX 400 from 2018 to 2026. The same PM164P14 element covers eleven machines around this airbox; the complete list is in the Fitment tab.
