The Granpasso spent a decade in Moto Morini's catalogue, longer than anything else built around this engine, and it is the machine in the range most likely to be found on a surface that has never seen tarmac. That is where the air filter stops being a routine service item and becomes the component that determines how far the bike will go before it needs attention.

Dust, and why oil makes it worse

The instinctive answer to a dusty environment is a filter that holds more, and the traditional way to hold more is a tacky oil coating on a cotton gauze. On a gravel road that reasoning fails twice. Fine dust bonds with the oil into a paste that closes the element faster than its rating would suggest, and any oil the airflow carries downstream settles on the hot-film air mass sensor, which reads a coated element as less air than is actually passing. The engine management then trims fuel against a number that is quietly wrong, and nothing on the dashboard says so.

Dry, and twice the area

The P08 CM170S contains no oil at all. Its polyester threads are at least 22 micrometres and are woven rather than pressed, presenting roughly twice the filtering surface of other performance elements in the same airbox. More area for the same quantity of dust means a slower rise in restriction, and when it does load up the fix is compressed air from the clean side, outwards — an evening job at a campsite rather than a spare carried across a border. Wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent if the day has been particularly unkind, then let it air-dry fully and refit it dry.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and let it dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame.
