DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Tiger Explorer sends its drive to the rear wheel through a shaft rather than a chain, a choice that suits a bike made for long distances and little maintenance. A shaft has its own manners, though. Engage the clutch abruptly and the drivetrain answers with a clunk and a lurch that runs through the whole bike, most noticeably in first gear and at walking pace. The Accossato ESC777 is a clutch lever for the Tiger Explorer of 2012 to 2020, machined from aluminium, with a reach you set to your hand so that the take-up can be as gradual as you want it.
Key Features
- Clutch lever for the Tiger Explorer, model years 2012 to 2020
- Mounts at the original clutch mounting
- Reach adjustable close to the pivot
- Blade lengths short, standard (approx. 138 mm) and long, by colour
- CNC-machined from aluminium, anodised finish
- Black hub; blade black, blue, red, orange, gold, silver or green
- Rigid blade with no folding joint
- Sold for track use, as no German ABE is documented
Construction and Material Quality
Rather than being cast, the ESC777 is machined: Accossato cuts it from solid aluminium on CNC equipment and anodises it afterwards. The hub, which contains the pivot and the adjuster, always comes in black so that it merges with the switchgear beside it. The blade wears the colour you ordered, as a finish that is part of the aluminium itself and cannot chip off like a layer of paint. Pulled in or at rest, the ESC777 is one stiff piece, and the effort of your fingers reaches the clutch without a detour through a second pivot.
Smooth Take-Up for a Shaft Drive
Smooth clutch work pays off on the Explorer more than on most bikes. The technique is not to let the lever out quickly through the bite point but to slow down in the middle of its travel, where the plates begin to grip, and to let the engine take up the load progressively. The shaft then turns the rear wheel without the jolt, and a passenger never notices the moment you pulled away. That fine control comes from the middle of the fingers rather than the tips, and the reach adjuster is what puts the blade there. Set it so that you can hold the lever at the bite point without strain for several seconds; if your fingers start to ache while you do this in a car park, the blade is still too far out. The long blade gives more leverage and a lighter pull, which helps when a big tourer has to be edged along at walking pace for any length of time.
Fitment and Compatibility
The ESC777 is the clutch lever Accossato lists for the Tiger Explorer from 2012 to 2020, under the name Tiger 1200 Explorer. It replaces the stock lever at the original mounting. On the brake side, the EDF014 covers the same years, so the pair can be ordered in one colour.
Road Approval
As far as documentation goes, the ESC777 has no German ABE, so it is sold for the circuit.
