DescriptionThe whole story▼

For many riders the MT-09 marks the second big step. The first was a licence and an A2 motorcycle; the second is a full-power bike whose three-cylinder engine pulls hard from low revs. Speeds build faster than on the smaller machine, and the front brake has to take them away again. The Accossato EDF016 is a CNC-machined replacement for the original brake lever of the MT-09, listed from 2014 to 2020, and its adjustable reach lets you put the blade exactly where your hand is ready for it.

Key Features

  • Brake lever for the Yamaha MT-09 from 2014 to 2020
  • Uses the original front master cylinder
  • Reach set by an adjuster at the pivot
  • Short, standard or long blade, the standard one approximately 138 mm
  • Seven blade colours, hub always black
  • Cut from aluminium on CNC machines, anodised
  • Rigid lever with no folding mechanism

Construction and Material Quality

Accossato shapes the EDF016 from aluminium on CNC machines and finishes it by anodising. Because it is machined rather than cast, the profile of the blade stays consistent along its length, and the edges are clean where your fingers close around it. The section nearest the pivot, which also holds the adjuster, is anodised black; the blade can be black as well, or silver, red, gold, green, orange or blue. The EDF016 is a fixed lever without the joint of a folding design, so the feel at the tip does not change however firmly you pull.

After Two Years on an A2 Bike

Moving from a restricted machine to the MT-09 is less a matter of learning a new bike than of recalibrating. Acceleration arrives sooner, the next bend comes up earlier, and stops begin from higher speeds than you are used to. Riders who step up this way often find that their braking habits trail behind their throttle hand for the first few weeks. An afternoon in an empty car park is time well spent: a series of stops, starting gently and getting firmer each time, until you know how the front end of the MT-09 behaves when you ask a lot of it. Set the reach before that session. The lever should meet your fingers without the wrist bending, so that the first part of the travel is used for braking rather than for reaching. If the original lever felt right, the standard blade is the obvious choice; the long one gives more leverage to riders who are used to braking with the whole hand, and the short one is for those already comfortable with two fingers.

Fitment and Compatibility

The EDF016 is listed for the MT-09 from 2014 to 2020. Accossato names the bike twice, once for the whole period and once for 2017 to 2020, the years after Yamaha's facelift with the new front styling, so both the original and the updated version of this MT-09 are covered. The later MT-09 with the larger engine is not part of this listing. On the left side, the ESV04A clutch lever is listed for the same 2014 to 2020 bikes.

Road Approval

For this lever there is no documented German ABE; it is therefore sold as a track part.
