There is one property of this element that matters more on a track day than any number on its data sheet: it is dry. Nothing is oiled, so nothing has to be re-oiled, and nothing has to cure before the bike goes back out. A dusty session can be answered in the paddock with compressed air and the same panel refitted immediately — which is not true of a medium that depends on a film of oil to do its filtering.

Why dry matters between sessions

An oiled cotton element that has been washed needs oil applied evenly and then time to spread before it filters as intended, and a rider who is short of both tends to fit it anyway. The failure mode is quiet: too little oil in places, too much in others, and oil where it should not be. A dry weave has none of that sequence. Air, water if necessary, moving air until dry, refit. The routine is short enough to fit between sessions and has no step that can be done badly under time pressure.

The rest of the picture

The medium itself measures 95.22 % retention on the 100-micron test, against 93.13 % for the standard weave in the same housing — a real difference and a small one. The flow rating above it is a property of the material and not a prediction about a 310 cm³ single, which will not draw anywhere near it. In an unmodified airbox the PM189S F1-85 leaves a standard Apache RR310 exactly as strong as it was; what an owner gets is a lower, steadier intake restriction and a part that survives being cleaned as often as the riding requires.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air on the clean face, worked outwards, covers routine service and most trackside cleaning. Lukewarm water with a mild detergent is for the end of a dirty weekend, rinsed until the runoff is clear. Then moving air at room temperature until the panel is genuinely dry — heat sources of every kind are excluded, because they damage the weave without showing it. Refit dry, with nothing applied.
