DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00281-74 is a shock absorber spring rated at 10 N/mm, 280 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 280 mm
  • 185 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 10 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 00281-74
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Why the Rate Holds

Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

Size and Rate

Free length 280 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 10 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing 10 N/mm

A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.

What Fitting Involves

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
