DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 04745-95 is a pair of fork springs rated at 9.5 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 37.5 mm inner diameter. This is the change a suspension technician makes first, before touching a single click.

Key Features

  • Supplied as a pair
  • Free length 240 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 9.5 N/mm
  • 145 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 37.5 mm
  • Öhlins part number 04745-95

Why the Rate Holds

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

Size and Rate

At 240 mm free length and 37.5 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Choosing 9.5 N/mm

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.

Installation

Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
