DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 04744-75 is a pair of fork springs rated at 7.5 N/mm, 260 mm long with a 25.5 mm inner diameter. Spring rate is the single largest variable in how a front end behaves, and it is the one thing no damping adjuster can compensate for.

Key Features

  • Free length 260 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 25.5 mm
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Measured spring rate 7.5 N/mm
  • 151 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 04744-75

Manufacture and Tolerance

Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 25.5 mm × 260 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 7.5 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Fitting

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
