DescriptionThe whole story▼

The first Monster, the M900 of 1993, was built around an almost provocatively simple idea: a tank, a seat, a trellis frame and an engine left entirely on show. The Monster 821 carries that idea forward with a liquid-cooled Testastretta twin, and on a bike built this way the engine is part of the styling, right down to its smallest fittings. Accossato's FP004 is one of those fittings: an oil filler cap with an M20x2.5 thread, CNC-machined from aluminium and anodised, listed for the Monster 821 from 2015 to 2019.

Key Features

  • Oil filler cap for the Ducati Monster 821, 2015 to 2019
  • The Monster 821 Stealth of 2019 is on Accossato's list as well
  • Thread M20x2.5, the only dimension Accossato gives
  • Aluminium, machined on CNC equipment and anodised
  • Eight colours: blue, green, black, orange, red, silver, titanium, gold
  • Adaptable to other motorcycles with the same cap size, once checked
  • No German ABE on file; for track use

Construction and Material Quality

Behind the FP004 are three steps: aluminium, CNC machining and anodising, the last of which forms the colour in the surface of the metal instead of painting it on. On a Monster 821 that colour counts for more than on a faired bike, because nothing covers the engine. Titanium, black and silver stay close to the factory look; red, gold, orange, blue or green add a deliberate point of colour. Accossato specifies the thread as M20x2.5 and states that the cap suits the listed motorcycles and can be adapted to others with a cap of that size.

An Engine With Nothing to Hide

The flip side of a naked engine is that every mark on it can be seen. A film of oil around the filler, dust stuck to a damp crankcase, the scars left by pliers on a cap that was once forced: on a Monster 821 all of this sits in plain view whenever someone stops to look at the bike. Most of it comes from haste during a top-up. Wait until the engine has been switched off and has cooled before the cap comes out, and read the level exactly as the owner's manual describes, including how the bike has to stand. Wipe around the filler first so that no grit drops into the engine, then add oil slowly, with a funnel and a cloth underneath, and read again before pouring more. Clean the thread and the sealing face, and turn the FP004 back in with your fingers; once it has seated, stop. A cap driven home with force leaves marks and seals no better. After the next ride, look at the filler and at the engine case below it. On a naked Monster that takes a second, and a dry, clean engine is the clearest sign that the job was done well.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato names the Monster 821 of 2015 to 2019 for the FP004 and includes the Stealth version of 2019. The cap is defined by its M20x2.5 thread, and according to Accossato it can also be adapted to other motorcycles that use a cap of the same size. In our catalogue the same part appears for the Monster 1200, the Hypermotard 939 and the Desert X. If you are not certain that your Monster 821 still wears its original filler cap, compare the thread before you order.

Road Approval

We have no test certificate or German ABE for the FP004 on record, so it is sold for racing and competition use.
