Before the five microns between these two media are worth an argument, there is a larger variable in the same box, and it is free. Air takes the easiest path it can find. An element that does not sit square in its frame, or a lid that closes on a trapped edge, leaves a route with no cloth in it at all, and that route beats every specification in the catalogue. On a 500 cm³ Voge Valico DSX of 2021, the filtration you actually get is settled at the moment the airbox is closed, not at the moment the part is chosen.

The gap no medium can cover

A filtration figure describes what happens to air that goes through the cloth. Air that goes around it is not filtered at any percentage at all. A bypass of that kind appears in no specification, changes nothing you can hear, and leaves no evidence on the element — the panel comes out looking properly used, because most of the air did pass through it. It matters more with a washable element than with a disposable one for a simple reason: this one is taken out and put back many times over the years, and every one of those is a chance to seat it badly.

Then, and only then, the five microns

With the seal right, the choice between media becomes the real one, and it is a trade rather than a ranking. This element opens to 85 µm and passes a rated 15,000 l/m²/sec; the standard CM251S closes to 80 µm and passes 5,050; the CM251T12 catalogued for the Valico line goes to 7 µm and 560. The racing weave measures 95.22 per cent retention at 100 microns against 93.13, which says it deals well with coarse debris and says nothing whatever about the fine fraction that wears an engine. For a road-registered DSX the standard cloth is the proportionate part, and no element of any aperture makes a standard Valico DSX noticeably stronger.

Care and cleaning

Cleaning is where a washable element is won or lost. Blow the CM251S F1-85 through from the clean side outwards, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent when air alone leaves a film behind, and rinse until the water runs off clear. Dry it fully in moving air — never with a heat gun, an oven or a flame — and then seat it squarely in its frame while it is completely dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
