Sprint Filter P08 Air Filter for Road & Track – Yamaha YZF-R3 (2015–2026) PM44S

Two cylinders ask an airbox for air differently than one. A single takes one gulp every second crank revolution and then leaves the box alone; the R3's parallel twin takes two in the same time, alternating, so the demand arrives at twice the frequency and with much shorter gaps. That is why the meaningful figure for a filter medium is a rate, not a peak: the P08 passes 5,050 litres per square metre per second, and the element carries roughly double the surface of other performance filters. The Sprint Filter P08 PM44S will not make a standard R3 faster — nothing that drops into a standard airbox will — but it is the version of this part with the most surface to work with and the least to lose as it loads.

Frequency is answered with surface

The airbox here is a fixed volume in a fixed space, shaped around the frame and tank, and it cannot be made bigger. The only variable left is the element inside — how much surface it presents, and how freely a square metre of it passes air. Sprint Filter's answer is a single woven layer carried over roughly twice the developed surface of a comparable filter, so each square metre does less work and the medium loads more slowly.

Dry polyester, and the cost of a finer weave

The P08 is spun from polyester threads of 22 microns and upwards and used dry. Oiled cotton gauze makes the air sticky instead, which puts a consumable film immediately upstream of two throttle bodies and their sensors. Sprint Filter measured a four-layer oiled cotton filter retaining 76.42 per cent of 100-micron test particles, against 93.13 per cent for the dry P08. Finer media exist for harder work — the water-repellent P037 at 37 microns, the P14 at 14 — and every step finer costs flow: 5,050 litres per square metre per second for the P08 against 4,500 and 1,800. Finer holds more and passes less. That is a trade, not a ranking, and on a twin that works high in the rev range the P08 is the end that keeps the flow.

Care and cleaning

Order matters more than effort. Compressed air first, from the clean side outwards, settling most services. Lukewarm water with a mild detergent next, rinsed until the water runs clear. Open-air drying last, taken all the way through — never with heat, never over a flame — before it is refitted dry. Oil is not used at any stage.
