Count what an ordinary filter service leaves behind: a panel in the bin, the box and bag it arrived in, and on an oiled cotton element a spray can and a set of rags nobody wants to handle twice. This one leaves none of it. It arrives dry, it is cleaned dry, it goes back dry, and the only thing that leaves the workshop afterwards is the dirt that came off it. Across the life of a TRK 702 — a machine bought to be ridden a long way and kept a long time — that takes a small recurring transaction out of ownership entirely. One condition is attached, and it is the whole point: a washable element only beats a disposable one if somebody washes it.
Key Features
- One dry layer of woven polyester, rated at 80 microns
- No filter oil at any stage: nothing to spray on, nothing to migrate downstream
- 5,050 l/m²/sec of rated flow; 93.13 % of 100-micron particles held in the maker’s comparison
- Sits in the series airbox of the 702 exactly where the factory panel sat, with no remap
- Approximately twice the filtering area of an ordinary performance element
- Two-year warranty, and a service life specified as that of the motorcycle
The condition attached
A disposable panel carries its own reminder: it gets replaced because the workshop has one on the shelf and the schedule says so. A reusable one has no such prompt, and a neglected reusable element is just a dirty filter with nothing to trigger its removal. The remedy is unglamorous — put the cleaning in the same calendar slot as an oil change and it stops being forgotten. Do that and the intake restriction returns to its own baseline each time. Skip it and the element drifts exactly like the paper one it replaced, minus the part number that would have made somebody notice.
Distance, and what it does to a filter
The 702 is built for long days, and long days are how filters really fill: exposure is a matter of hours spent in moving air, not of the occasional dusty kilometre. That argues for a large area and a stable restriction rather than for anything dramatic, and it is worth saying plainly that no drop-in element makes a standard TRK 702 noticeably stronger. Airbox, throttle bodies and calibration were signed off together; a change of cloth does not rewrite them. What changes is the shape of the curve between services.
Care and cleaning
Blow the panel through from its clean face outwards, so that whatever the weave caught leaves along the route it arrived by. Where a film resists the air, hand-warm water with a little mild detergent releases it; rinse until nothing more comes out of the cloth. Drying happens in moving air and never against a heat source of any kind, because polyester tolerates dirt far better than it tolerates heat. The SM258S is refitted dry and unoiled, and the maintenance sheet for it is filed under the Downloads tab on this page.
