Put the two dry weaves side by side as the maker publishes them. The standard cloth for this airbox is woven to 80 µm and rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec. This one is woven to 37 µm — less than half the opening — and rated at 4,500. The aperture more than halves; the published rate falls by roughly a tenth. Whatever else is true of a finer weave, that is a smaller price in throughput than the two mesh figures on their own would lead anybody to expect.
Key Features
- 37 µm water-repellent polyester, dry, with a published rate of 4,500 l/m²/sec
- The standard weave for comparison, from the same table: 80 µm at 5,050 l/m²/sec
- 91.8 % of 37-micron particles retained in the manufacturer's measurement
- A race assembly; the carbon fibre frame belongs to the WorldSBK part, not to this one
- No oil at any point, so cleaning finishes with a rinse and a wait
- Standard airbox, no modification, no remap, two years of warranty
Reading two numbers together
Mesh and flow are published for every medium in the range and they move in opposite directions: finer cloth holds more back and passes less air. That much is a trade and not a ranking. What this particular pair of figures shows is how the trade is priced between these two weaves — a large step in filtration for a small step in rate — and that is the clearest argument for the 37 µm cloth on a machine which is not being ridden at sustained full load. It is not an argument about power. A 1299 with this element fitted makes exactly the power a 1299 makes.
What the figures leave out
Neither number predicts how quickly the weave loads in the air a particular 1299 meets, and that is what really decides how often the box has to come open. Neither describes wet behaviour either, which is a property of the cloth rather than of its rate, and which is the reason this medium is catalogued for wet and demanding conditions instead of for lap times. R127S-WP-AVIO earns its place on a 1299 ridden through weather and cleaned on a schedule its owner sets, and it is hard to justify anywhere else.
Care and cleaning
Air does the regular work: nozzle on the clean face, blowing outward, until the weave stops giving anything up. Once or twice a season, or after a winter of spray, wash it in hand-warm water with a mild detergent and rinse it through until nothing more comes away. Then leave it to dry in ordinary air for as long as that takes, keeping it clear of radiators, heat guns and flame, and put it back only when it is dry to the core, with no dressing on the cloth. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the airbox of the Ducati Panigale 1299, catalogued under model years 2015 to 2019. The same assembly covers five further machines — the 899, the 959 and the 1199 and the 955 cc V2 pair — with each attributed window shown in the Fitment tab.
