DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21066-21 is a shock absorber spring rated at 75 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Free length 200 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 75 N/mm
  • 98 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Öhlins part number 21066-21

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 200 mm and the inner diameter at 51 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 75 N/mm

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
