DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60281-08 is a shock absorber spring rated at 100 N/mm, 135 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Free length 135 mm
  • Öhlins part number 60281-08
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 100 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 59 mm of usable stroke

How Öhlins Makes Them

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips.

The Numbers That Matter

At 135 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Choosing 100 N/mm

A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Fitting

The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
