Separately, the flip-front test: the chin bar remained fully locked through 63 % of impacts. No manufacturer paid for that test and no manufacturer can influence it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eAbout the Oblivion Matt Black H-V finish\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFluorescent yellow is not simply a bright paint. The pigment absorbs ultraviolet light and re-emits it as visible light, which is why it looks unnaturally luminous on an overcast morning and at dusk — exactly the conditions in which a car pulls out of a side road. Oblivion places that colour where it does the most good: along the lower flank at mirror height, and across the brow and the upper chin bar, which is the part of you a driver sees first through a windscreen. Those are approved for closed riding alone, and opening one in motion places you outside the certification it was sold under. Dual homologation costs a manufacturer a second complete round of laboratory testing, which is precisely why it is not universal — and why it is the line on the label worth checking before you buy any flip-up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eHPFC — what the shell is actually made of\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe shell is a fibre composite that LS2 designates HPFC. It is worth knowing where that sits: above the thermoplastics on the cheaper LS2 helmets, below the carbon on the Advant X Carbon, and the same class of material LS2 uses for its composite full-face touring models.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn a modular helmet the shell does more work than on a full-face. It carries the pivot the chin bar rotates on, the housing for the drop-down sun visor and the latch that has to hold the bar shut under impact — three deliberate interruptions in a structure whose job is to be uninterrupted. Composite construction is how those regions get reinforced without adding thickness everywhere else.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWhat the ECE 22.06 plaque actually means\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery helmet on this page carries ECE 22.06, and it is worth knowing what that plaque now costs a manufacturer. The standard it replaced, 22.05, struck the shell at five fixed points and measured only how hard the head was stopped. 22.06 strikes up to eighteen points, at more than one speed, and adds a test that did not exist before: the helmet is dropped onto an angled anvil faced with abrasive paper, so the laboratory can measure how far the head is \u003cem\u003espun\u003c\/em\u003e as well as how hard it is stopped.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat matters because rotational acceleration is what tears the bridging veins between brain and skull, and until 2021 no European standard measured it at all. 22.06 also tests the visor, and any accessory fitted to the helmet is tested in place rather than removed for the exam. We would rather explain what that means than let the line pass: on a two-shell helmet the smallest size is a large shell with thicker EPS inside it. It fits, it is certified — and it looks marginally bigger on a small head than a purpose-tooled shell would.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNearly every flip-up is built this way, and the mechanism is the reason. Pivot, latch and sun-visor housing are moulded into the shell, so a third shell size is not a scaled copy but an entirely new tool with all of that geometry re-engineered. What the helmet controls is the seal at the neck roll, the gap under the chin bar and the vents. A chin curtain is fitted as standard, and it is the single most effective piece of quiet in the box — provided it stays in the helmet after you clean it.
