The Katana shares its airbox with the GSX-S1000, and on paper it shares the case for a racing filter as well. What it does not share is the way it gets used. These are bought in good part for how they look, they cover modest distances in a year, they are ridden on chosen days in chosen weather, and they winter under a cover. None of that makes the F1-85 medium a poorer fit here. In one respect it makes it an easier one, because the half of this trade that costs the owner something is measured in the air a motorcycle actually pulls, and this one pulls comparatively little.
Key Features
- Dry polyester in the racing specification, filtering at 85 microns, oil-free by design
- Passes 15,000 litres per square metre per second where the road P08 passes 5,050
- A large filtering surface does the work, rather than a mesh stretched thin
- Slides into the standard airbox in place of the original element, with no other change
- Inspected, blown clean and refitted season after season instead of replaced
- Two years of warranty run from the day of purchase
A small annual volume changes the size of the risk
The objection to an 85-micron weave against the standard 80 is the fine fraction it lets through over time — and time, for a filter, really means air. What an element admits is a proportion of what passes through it, so a machine covering a few thousand dry kilometres a year admits a fraction of what a commuter or a loaded tourer does. The reserve, meanwhile, is available on precisely the rides this motorcycle is kept for: the clear morning, the empty road, the one stretch where the engine is allowed to run right out. None of that is power the filter created — no drop-in element gives a standard motorcycle anything it did not have. It keeps the intake off the list of things quietly in the way.
The owner this medium wants
A racing weave assumes somebody who opens the airbox: inspects it, cleans it, and treats the interval as hours under load rather than as a number on the odometer. Most motorcycles are not owned that way; Katanas often are, which is why the condition that makes this medium defensible is one this owner already meets. Standing time deserves the same attention: an engine that sits from November to March ages its oil by the calendar, and an element left dusty over winter dries that dust into its media. The single habit worth adding is to clean it before laying the bike up rather than in spring — it is out in a few minutes and back in the same evening.
Care and cleaning
The PM236S F1-85 is serviced with compressed air, directed at the clean face and pushed outwards until the weave is open. Should it want more, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, then let it dry completely in open air — never with heat, never with a flame. Refit it dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Suzuki Katana, 2022 to 2026, dropping into the standard airbox with nothing else touched. The same element serves four machines in the Suzuki range; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
