Two pairs of numbers sit beside each other in Sprint Filter's tables and they do not add up the way most people expect. The standard cloth for this airbox is quoted at 80 microns with a rated 5,050 l/m²/sec; this one at 85 microns with 15,000. Five microns is a difference of about six per cent in the opening, and it arrives alongside roughly three times the flow. Whatever separates these two weaves, it is plainly not mainly the size of the hole.
Key Features
- Woven polyester in a single dry layer, supplied without oil and kept that way
- Filtration at 85 µm with a rated flow of 15,000 l/m²/sec, the racing specification
- 95.22 per cent retention of 100-micron test particles in the manufacturer's comparison
- Roughly double the filtering surface of a typical performance panel
- Fits the series airbox as it stands: no adapter, no modification, no remapping
- Cleaned and refitted rather than discarded, backed by two years of warranty
What a woven cloth has besides an aperture
A weave is a geometry, not a sieve with one dimension. How much of its area is open rather than thread, how the threads lie across one another, how thick the layer is and how sharply the air has to turn on its way through: all of that sets resistance, and none of it shows up in an aperture figure. So the honest reading of 85 µm and 15,000 l/m²/sec is that they are two separate statements about one cloth, and the second is the one being bought. Taken alone, the first would suggest the difference between the two elements is trivial.
And what that means on an RS
It means the purchase is a rate, and a rate only matters where something calls for it. A faired sports tourer at legal speeds, loaded, on a public road asks for a fraction of what the standard weave already passes; the extra capacity is entirely real, it is simply never approached. This element is listed at close to three times the standard one for the same housing, and the fair summary is that the difference buys headroom rather than performance. No filter dropped into a series airbox makes a standard R 1250 RS noticeably faster — intake, injection and exhaust were developed as one piece of work, and a panel sits inside that work.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does almost all of it, applied to the clean side of the weave and worked outwards; the dirt then leaves through the surface that admitted it instead of being pushed deeper. A wash is for the residue that air no longer moves — tepid water, a small amount of mild detergent, then rinsing until the run-off comes away clean. The element has to dry completely before refitting, in circulating air and never with warmth of any kind, because heat is what destroys the medium. The PM142S F1-85 goes in dry; its servicing sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW R 1250 RS of 2019 to 2023, replacing the standard panel with nothing modified around it. Three machines are listed for this element, all of them road boxers of the 1250 generation; the Fitment tab shows each with its model years.
