The facts.

DescriptionThe whole story▼

A Diavel never leaves the tarmac, and owners reasonably conclude from that it never meets dust. The road disagrees. Every sealed surface carries the ground remains of whatever runs over it — brake material, rubber and clutch dust, sand thrown in from the verge, whatever the winter's gritting left behind — and all of it lifts again the moment a wheel goes past.

Key Features

  • Dry non-woven medium containing no oil at any point in its service life
  • Rated at 14 microns of filtration against the 80 microns of the standard cloth
  • Rated flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec, which is the deliberate cost of that rating
  • Sits in the standard airbox on both the Diavel 1260 and the 1260 S, mapping unchanged
  • Regenerated with compressed air in the time a coffee takes
  • Two years of warranty from the day of purchase

Dust belongs to the road, not to the riding style

It is a property of the surface and of the traffic on it rather than of the machine or of how it is used. A motorcycle that only ever rides sealed roads still rides through the airborne fraction of those roads, and the fraction that stays airborne long enough to be breathed by an engine is the fine one — the coarse part settles almost at once. Verges add their own contribution, roadworks add a coarser one, and a city centre in August adds more than either. That is the material a 14-micron rating addresses and an 80-micron one, by definition, was never asked to.

What the finer rating does and does not buy

It does not buy performance. A standard 1262 cc twin is not held back by its air filter, and anybody who tells you a panel element woke one up is describing something else. What it buys is a narrower path for abrasive material on its way to the bore, over years of riding through exactly the sort of air described above. The cost is flow — 1,800 l/m²/sec where the woven panel offers 5,050 — and a Diavel ridden at the speeds Diavels are ridden at never reaches for the difference.

Care and cleaning

Air first and water rarely. Compressed air on the clean face, blown outward, is what the mat normally needs; when it stops responding to that, wash it in warm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water leaves clean. Drying is done in open air only, with no heater, no gun and no flame anywhere near it, and PM127P14 returns to the box dry. Sprint Filter's maintenance leaflet is kept in the Downloads tab.

Fitment & Compatibility

Applies to the Ducati Diavel 1260 and Diavel 1260 S, 2019 to 2022. Eleven Ducati models take this element in all; see the Fitment tab for the list.
