The facts.

DescriptionThe whole story▼

The 2016 Tuono grew to 1077 cc and changed almost nothing around it. Aprilia took the V4 out inside the same frame, the same bodywork and — the detail that matters on this page — the same airbox, which is why a single reference covers the engine on both sides of that step. The element is consequently feeding a larger motor than the box was first drawn around, and the only thing left that can compensate is what has been folded inside the panel.

Key Features

  • Dry polyester weave; no film is added at any stage, so none can travel down the tract
  • Roughly double the filtering area of other performance elements, inside unchanged panel dimensions
  • Rated at 80 microns of filtration and 5,050 litres per square metre per second of flow
  • Uses the original fixings in the original box — no modification and no remap
  • Cleaned and refitted: a component to keep, not a consumable to repurchase
  • Built to last as long as the motorcycle it is fitted to

More displacement, the same aperture

A larger engine moves more air at every throttle position, not only at full load, so the volume crossing the medium went up while the space available for medium did not. Area is the one variable left. Fold more cloth into the same frame and the flow through each part of it falls, which keeps the pressure loss lower and, more usefully, keeps it lower for longer as dust accumulates. None of that is a power modification. The 1100 makes what Aprilia homologated it to make, and an element claiming otherwise would be describing a different motorcycle.

Standard and Factory on one panel

What separates the Factory from the base 1100 is suspension, wheels and finish — Öhlins at both ends, forged rims. None of it reaches the induction side, so both versions take the identical element, as do the RSV4 models of the period. The reference runs across twenty-seven machines in total, which is the unglamorous reason it stays easy to buy years after a particular model year has dropped off the price list.

Care and cleaning

Servicing is an air line and a few minutes. Blow outwards from the clean side, never back through the dirty face. If the panel has met worse than road dust, wash it in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the run-off is clear and leave it in moving air until it is completely dry — never hurry that with a heat gun or a flame, and never fit it damp. Fitment & Compatibility

For the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 and Tuono V4 1100 Factory built between 2016 and 2020. Twenty-seven Aprilia and Moto Guzzi models share this reference; the full list is under the Fitment tab.
