DescriptionThe whole story▼

The Öhlins KA 740 exists because the Kawasaki Z900RS (2017–2026) needed its own settings, not a shared set. Damping that fades turns a predictable Z900RS into one that has to be ridden around.

Key Features

  • Adjustable rebound damping via the knob above the lower eyelet
  • Öhlins spring 21103-34 included
  • Delivered with a 100 N/mm spring, selected for the Z900RS
  • Direct fitment on the Kawasaki Z900RS (2017–2026)
  • Length 350 +10/-2 mm, set for this chassis
  • 69 mm of damper stroke
  • Gas-pressurised monotube damper with the reservoir integrated into the body
  • Monotube damper layout

How Öhlins Builds It

Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Spring and damper are separate part numbers, so a rate change does not mean a new unit. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

The STX 46 Blackline in Detail

Preload and rebound adjustment work exactly as on the gold model; only the anodising differs. The Blackline finish exists because not every motorcycle suits Öhlins yellow. Öhlins introduced Blackline for machines whose own colour scheme fights with yellow-gold.

Fitted to the Z900RS

The 2017–2026 generation kept the same chassis dimensions throughout, so one Öhlins number serves the whole run. A modern classic looks period-correct and is expected to ride like a current machine, and the suspension is where that promise usually breaks.

Damping Performance

The fitted spring is 21103-34, and Öhlins lists neighbouring rates under their own numbers. The recommended oil is 01309-XX; using something else changes the damping the shim stack was set for. A 46 mm piston gives the oil a large working area, so the force curve stays flat as temperature rises. Mounting length is 350 +10/-2 mm. Preload is set separately again, and preload is what determines static sag rather than damping. A single click produces a change most riders can detect, which is not true of every adjustable damper.

Fitment and Compatibility

Öhlins part number KA 740 is the correct number for the Kawasaki Z900RS as built 2017–2026. 4 machines in the range take this number, the Kawasaki Z900RS among them. Öhlins lists this fitment under the model designations Z900RS , Z900RS Performance.

Road Approval

Road approval: ABE (Germany). The unit is covered by a German ABE for the Kawasaki Z900RS, so no individual inspection or entry in the vehicle documents is required. The approval document ships with the product.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
