DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01106-08 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80-140 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 01106-08
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 80-140 N/mm (progressive)
  • Progressively wound
  • Free length 190 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 190 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

How a Rear Spring Works

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

What Fitting Involves

Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
