DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01091-19 is a shock absorber spring rated at 70 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 160 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 70 N/mm
  • 77 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 01091-19

Why the Rate Holds

Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 160 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 70 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

What Fitting Involves

Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
