DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00696-14 is a shock absorber spring rated at 60 N/mm, 290 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 00696-14
  • Free length 290 mm
  • Measured spring rate 60 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 145 mm of usable stroke

Manufacture and Tolerance

The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 290 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 60 N/mm

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

What Fitting Involves

Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
