DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 05174-13 is a shock absorber spring rated at 45 N/mm, 370 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 45 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 05174-13
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • 193 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 370 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

Size and Rate

At 370 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Fitting

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
