DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00281-07 is a shock absorber spring rated at 45 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 93.2 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 180 mm
  • Measured spring rate 45 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 00281-07
  • Inner diameter 46 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

Size and Rate

Free length 180 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 45 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

Fitting

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
