DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-90 is a shock absorber spring rated at 32 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 01096-90
  • Measured spring rate 32 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 105 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Why the Rate Holds

Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

Dimensions

The 57 mm bore and 190 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 32 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Choosing 32 N/mm

Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary.

Installation

Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
