DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-97 is a shock absorber spring rated at 27 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated black
  • Öhlins part number 00180-97
  • Measured spring rate 27 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 126 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 220 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

The Numbers That Matter

At 220 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Choosing 27 N/mm

The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

What Fitting Involves

Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
