DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00281-48 is a shock absorber spring rated at 26 N/mm, 300 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • 166 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 00281-48
  • Measured spring rate 26 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 300 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips.

Size and Rate

Free length 300 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 26 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing 26 N/mm

The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary.

What Fitting Involves

A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
