DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00281-22 is a shock absorber spring rated at 25 N/mm, 125 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Free length 125 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00281-22
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 80.9 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 25 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

The Numbers That Matter

At 125 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

Fitting

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
