DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 61104-64 is a shock absorber spring rated at 160 N/mm, 130 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 130 mm
  • 56 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 61104-64
  • Measured spring rate 160 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow

How Öhlins Makes Them

The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

Size and Rate

At 130 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.

Fitting

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
