DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00698-59 is a shock absorber spring rated at 150 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • 92 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 00698-59
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 150 N/mm
  • Free length 230 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement.

The Numbers That Matter

At 230 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
