DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01103-49 is a shock absorber spring rated at 130 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 01103-49
  • Measured spring rate 130 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 103 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 240 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one.

Size and Rate

Öhlins holds the free length at 240 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 130 N/mm

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

Fitting

Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
