DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60024-49 is a shock absorber spring rated at 130 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 130 N/mm
  • Free length 170 mm
  • Öhlins part number 60024-49

Manufacture and Tolerance

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

The Numbers That Matter

At 170 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.

What Fitting Involves

Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
