DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01091-34 is a shock absorber spring rated at 100 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • 79 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 100 N/mm
  • Free length 160 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01091-34
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

How Öhlins Makes Them

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

Dimensions

Free length 160 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 100 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

How a Rear Spring Works

On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

Installation

Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
