A Speed Triple R wears no fairing, which changes the job its airbox is given. On a faired machine a nose and side panels stand between the road and the intake and settle the air before an element ever sees it. Here there is bodywork enough for two headlights and little else, so whatever a dry carriageway lifts behind a lorry, or a gritted lane throws up in February, arrives close to full strength. The Sprint Filter P14 answers with a dry special non-woven medium rated at 14 microns, and it charges for that fineness in airflow.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven medium rated at 14 microns, run completely without oil
- Rated airflow of 1,800 litres per square metre per second, against 5,050 for the standard P08
- A deep pleat pack holding about twice as much media as a conventional sports filter
- Sits in the series airbox in its original position: no cutting, no brackets, no fuelling change
- Cleaned with compressed air and put straight back in instead of thrown away
- Specified for the life of the motorcycle and covered for two years from the day it is bought
What an unfaired bike asks of its filter
Fine filtration is not something a rider feels. Nothing about the throttle response of a 1050 triple changes because the medium got tighter; this element earns its keep where nobody looks, on the inlet side of the valves. Airborne mineral dust is abrasive, and the fraction that does the damage is the part too fine to see. A 14-micron medium holds back a great deal more of it than a general-purpose road element does. On a naked bike that spends its miles in traffic, on gravel-dusted back roads or on a long hot summer route, that is a defensible reason to give up flow.
Where the P08 is the better balance
A tighter medium retains more and passes less. That is a swap, not a ranking: the P14 is not an improved P08, it is a different specification for different air. At 1,800 l/m²/sec it moves considerably less than the 5,050 of the P08, and a strong 1050 triple with a real appetite at the top of the rev range is exactly where that deserves thought. Ridden hard on clean tarmac, or on track days, the P08 is the better-balanced choice. Choose the P14 when dirty air is routine rather than the exception.
Care and cleaning
PM193P14 is serviced, not consumed. Take it out and run a compressed-air line over the inner, clean face so the dust is driven back out the way it arrived, then check the pleats against a light. If it is genuinely grimy, lukewarm water with a little mild detergent finishes the job. Let it dry in open air, well away from heaters, hot air guns and any flame, because heat distorts the medium, and refit it only when it is completely dry. It is never oiled. The cleaning sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Triumph Speed Triple R, 1050 cc, model years 2016 and 2017. The same element covers three machines: the Speed Triple R (2016–2017), the Speed Triple RS (2018–2020) and the Speed Triple S (2016–2020). It goes into the standard airbox in the original position.
