Most XSR 125s live in town, and town air is the dirtiest air a road motorcycle breathes. It carries brake dust, tyre and clutch particles, the fine grit that traffic keeps in permanent suspension, and in winter a haze of road salt — all of it drawn in at low speed, close to the ground, in the stop-start rhythm that also means the engine rarely reaches full operating temperature on a short trip. The Sprint Filter P08 PM198S answers that with an element you can take out, blow clean and refit the same evening, as often as the riding actually warrants.
Key Features
- 80 microns of filtration and 5,050 litres per square metre per second of airflow
- Never oiled — with a dry P08 medium there is nothing that can migrate downstream
- Roughly double the filtering area of a comparable performance filter
- It replaces the original element in the standard airbox, so nothing is modified, nothing remapped and homologation stays as it is
- Reusable and washable, with compressed air as the standard service
- Covered for two years, starting on the day it is bought
Short trips are the hard case
Service schedules count kilometres because kilometres are easy to count. A filter does not age that way — it ages by the volume and the quality of the air that has passed through it. Two XSR 125s can reach the same service interval with elements in entirely different condition: one ridden at weekends on open roads, one used every day for four kilometres through traffic. A washable element lets the maintenance follow the conditions instead of the odometer.
Why it is dry, and why that matters in traffic
Oiled cotton gauze works by making the air sticky. On a modern injected single that oil sits directly upstream of the sensors and the throttle body, and it is a consumable that has to be replaced correctly every time. The P08 is woven polyester used dry — spun from threads of 22 microns and upwards — and it is regenerated with compressed air instead. Sprint Filter measured a four-layer oiled cotton filter retaining 76.42 per cent of 100-micron test particles, against 93.13 per cent for the dry P08. Finer media exist for harsher conditions, the P14 at 14 microns among them, but every step finer costs flow: 5,050 litres per square metre per second for the P08 against 1,800 for the P14. That is a trade, not a ranking.
Care and cleaning
Dirt leaves the way it arrived, in reverse: compressed air blown from the clean side outwards. If a wash is needed, lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a rinse until the water runs clear. The element then dries in open air, completely, before it goes anywhere near the airbox — never with heat, never over a flame, and never refitted damp. There is no oiling step to remember. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha XSR 125, 2021 to 2026, and a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same PM198S element serves seven machines built around this airbox, in both the 125 and 155 versions of the engine; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
