Look at what Sprint Filter offers for this one airbox and the spread is remarkable: a nonwoven that screens at 7 microns at one end, a racing weave that flows 15,000 l/m²/sec at the other. Very few housings in the catalogue are asked to cover that much ground, and the reason is the motorcycle. No other machine in the range is expected to do a school run on Tuesday and a gravel pass on Saturday. SM260S is the element that sits between those two extremes, and it sits there on purpose rather than by default.
Key Features
- Single-layer dry polyester weave with 80-micron filtration
- Flow rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec, the reference figure of the range
- Dry throughout, never oiled, nothing to migrate onto sensors
- Roughly double the filtering area of a common performance element
- Series airbox, series panel position, no modification, no remap
- Washed and reused for the life of the bike; two-year warranty
Choosing the middle deliberately
The range is a straight exchange from one end to the other. A finer medium holds back more and passes less; a coarser one passes more and holds back less. Nothing in that arrangement makes the extremes better than the centre, and for a machine that spends the overwhelming majority of its kilometres on sealed roads the centre is where the sensible answer lives. The 80-micron weave gives up nothing meaningful in flow and still measured 93.13 per cent retention of 100-micron particles, where a four-layer oiled cotton returned 76.42 per cent in the same comparison.
The claim worth refusing
That a filter transforms a big adventure boxer. It does not. No insert inside a standard airbox makes a series R 1300 GS noticeably stronger, whatever the medium, and an owner who is told otherwise is being sold a story. The two things that do change are worth having on a machine covering long distances. Intake resistance begins lower and drifts upward more slowly across the interval, because a larger filtering area spreads the same dust more thinly. And the airbox stops generating a line on the parts invoice, because this element is cleaned and refitted rather than thrown away and replaced.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean face of SM260S, directed outward through the loaded side, does most of the work after a dusty stage. When the load is greasier than air can shift, lukewarm water with a mild detergent will clear it, rinsed until the water runs clean. It then dries in moving air for as long as it needs, never over a heater, never with a flame, since heat rather than dirt is what ends the life of one of these. It is refitted dry and unoiled. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab of this page.
Fitment & Compatibility
Cut for the BMW R 1300 GS built from 2023 to 2026, fitted as a direct replacement in the unmodified series airbox. The listing covers this one machine; the R 1300 R and R 1300 RS, though they share the engine family, use a separate Sprint Filter number. The Fitment tab shows the covered machine and its year span as published.
