DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 05677-15 is a shock absorber spring rated at 60 N/mm, 250 mm long with a 67 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 60 N/mm
  • Free length 250 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 132 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 05677-15
  • Inner diameter 67 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

Dimensions

The 67 mm bore and 250 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 60 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
