DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-69 is a shock absorber spring rated at 170 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 170 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 01096-69
  • 78 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 190 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

The Numbers That Matter

At 190 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
