DescriptionThe whole story▼

Ask club racers why their gear levers work upside down and most of them will describe the same place on a circuit: the exit of a long left-hander, bike still leaned over, engine pulling hard and the next gear needed now. On a BMW S 1000 RR that moment arrives quickly. Accossato's FT052 rearset for the S 1000 RR of 2015 to 2018 is built from aluminium, moves the feet further back than the original footrests and can be set up for the standard pattern or the reversed race pattern.

Key Features

  • Adjustable racing street rearsets for the BMW S 1000 RR, 2015–2018
  • Shift pattern standard or reversed (race shift)
  • Aluminium construction, simple and functional
  • Knurled footpegs and knurled lever tips
  • Aluminium heel guard plates
  • Rearward riding position compared with the stock parts
  • All black, or black with blue details
  • No German ABE on record; for track use

Construction and Material Quality

The FT052 is a working part and looks like one. Accossato keeps the design simple and functional, makes the rearset of aluminium and adds heel guards of aluminium plate. The footpegs and the tips of the gear and brake levers are knurled, which gives the hard sole of a race boot a positive hold. Accossato describes the kit as adjustable, though it does not say how the adjustment works, so leave the set-up to the workshop that fits it. Two versions are offered: black throughout, or black with blue details.

Why Racers Turn the Pattern Upside Down

With a standard pattern, an upshift means lifting the gear lever with the top of your toes. In a left-hand corner the left side of the bike is close to the tarmac, the lever sits in a narrow gap above it, and working a boot underneath while leaned over is awkward; the toe of the boot can even touch the track. Reverse the pattern and the upshift becomes a push down on the lever, which the foot can do from the peg without changing position. Downshifts, which now need a lift, happen under braking with the bike more upright, when there is room to do it. That is why reversed shifting is common in racing and on dedicated track bikes. The S 1000 RR is at home in that setting, but changing patterns has a cost: your left foot must unlearn a movement it has repeated for years. Spend the first sessions at a modest pace until upshifts come without thought, and avoid riding bikes with different patterns on the same day.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the FT052 for the S 1000 RR of the model years 2015 to 2018. The kit replaces the original footrest assemblies, and the connections to gearbox and rear brake have to be set up again, which is a job for a specialist workshop. It should give the brake pedal some free play before the brake applies, test the brake light and set the gear lever position for your boot. Fasteners go in at BMW's torque values, with thread locker where the manual specifies it.

Road Approval

No approval paperwork for German roads, neither ABE nor Teilegutachten, is known to us for the FT052 on the S 1000 RR. It is intended for the circuit, which is also where a reversed pattern belongs; on the road that layout is unusual.
