In this family the price list is silent on the step from 14 microns to 7: both nonwoven panels for the Caballero's airbox carry the same price, and both sit below the standard woven element. Whatever decides between them, it is not the money. It is the route — how much of the year this bike spends in air that is genuinely loaded with mineral dust.

When the price cannot decide

Buyers often let a price list do part of the choosing, on the reasonable assumption that the dearer part is the more capable one. Here that shortcut fails in both directions: the two fine media cost the same as each other, and the coarse one that suits most riding costs more than either. The catalogue is not ranking anything. It is offering four different answers to four different sets of conditions, and expecting the owner to know which conditions are theirs.

What seven microns is answering

Between this mat and the standard weave lies a factor of nine in rated flow, and that penalty is paid on every ride, including the tarmac miles to the trailhead and the commute in between. It is worth it where suspended dust is the working environment rather than an occasional event — dry ground, sand, unsealed roads in high summer, riding in a group where the air has already been stirred. Where it is not, the standard element is the better-matched part, and the SM249T12 is an expensive habit in flow terms. Neither adds power: in an unmodified airbox this element leaves a standard Caballero exactly as strong as it was.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air from the clean side, worked outwards, is the first step for the SM249T12, and a fine nonwoven releases its load slowly enough that this takes time. Lukewarm water and a mild detergent do the rest, rinsed until the runoff is clear. Drying happens in moving air at room temperature and in no other way — heat guns, radiators and open flame destroy the mat before anything looks wrong. It is refitted dry, with nothing applied to it.
