An air filter is not there to protect a power figure. It is there to protect a bore, a set of rings and a pair of valve seats from material that is harder than any of them and that arrives continuously, in quantities nobody measures. Everything else a filter does can be undone by washing it. Abrasive wear cannot: it accumulates quietly, it is never announced, and it is the one consequence of a filtration decision that no later maintenance reverses. PM263T12 is the finest medium Sprint Filter makes, catalogued for the Hypermotard 698 Mono.
Key Features
- Dry polyester special nonwoven filtering at 7 µm — the finest grade in the Sprint Filter range
- Rated at 560 l/m²/sec, against 5,050 for the standard woven panel in the same housing
- Dry from the box and dry when refitted: no oiling, no re-treatment, nothing to migrate downstream
- Sits in the series airbox in place of the original element — no cutting, no adapter, no remap
- Roughly twice the filtering area of a conventional performance element
- Cleaned and reused instead of thrown away, with two years of warranty from purchase
The consequence that cannot be washed out
A clogged element costs airflow, and airflow comes back the moment the panel is cleaned. Particles that pass through do not come back at all — they go where the air goes and leave a record in the metal. That asymmetry is the honest case for a fine grade: it is not bought for the coming season but for the far end of the engine's life, which is exactly the part of ownership that is hardest to picture at the point of sale. Seven microns is drawn for suspended mineral dust as a working condition, and it holds a fraction that an 80 µm weave was never designed to catch.
And the price of it
A ninth of the standard rated flow is a real cost, paid on every ride and not only on dusty ones. Finer means more retained and less passed — a trade, never a ranking, and the T12 is not a better filter than the P08 but a filter drawn for harder air. Neither of them makes the bike faster: an element dropped into an unmodified airbox leaves a standard 698 Mono precisely as strong as it left the factory. So the mat is right where loose, dry ground is part of the routine, and over-specified where it is not.
Care and cleaning
Routine servicing is compressed air, directed at the clean face and worked outward so the load retraces its path out of the medium. When air alone will not do it, lukewarm water with a mild detergent will, rinsed through until it runs clear. Drying happens in moving air at room temperature — never with heat, because heat, not dirt, is what ends a nonwoven of this kind, and the damage is invisible until it matters. Refit dry, untreated. Sprint Filter's cleaning sheet is available under the Downloads tab on this page.
