DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins developed YA 041 around the Yamaha FZ8 (2010–2016) — its weight, its linkage and its geometry. Standard rear dampers are built to a price; this one is built to a specification.

Key Features

  • Adjustable compression damping at the reservoir
  • 46 mm damping piston
  • Damper stroke 67,5 mm
  • Spring rate as delivered: 120, matched to the FZ8
  • Adjustable rebound damping via the knob above the lower eyelet
  • Listed by Öhlins for the Yamaha FZ8 (2010–2016) and no other machine
  • Remote hydraulic spring-preload adjuster on a flexible hose
  • Monotube damper layout

Construction and Material Quality

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. The damper body is hard-anodised aluminium, which resists both corrosion and the thermal cycling a rear shock lives with.

Damping and Adjustment

Öhlins builds it to 320 mm between the eyes for this chassis. Öhlins uses a 46 mm piston here: more area, lower oil velocity, less heat generated for the same force. 120 is the rate Öhlins selected after testing on the FZ8. Stroke is 67,5 mm, which is the travel Öhlins has to work with on this linkage. The adjuster range is usable end to end rather than only around the middle. Öhlins publishes a baseline setting for each part number, which is the sensible starting point.

Setting It Up for the FZ8

This part number spans model years 2010 to 2016; earlier and later generations take different numbers.

Where This Sits in the Öhlins Line-up

The spring is a separate item with its own Öhlins number, so a rate change does not mean a new damper. Where the standard damper uses a fixed orifice, the STX 46 meters oil through a shim stack that can be re-valved by any Öhlins service centre. The 46 mm piston is the same size Öhlins uses in far more expensive units; what changes is the shim stack behind it.

Fitment and Compatibility

Öhlins releases YA 041 against the Yamaha FZ8 (2010–2016). Nothing about it is generic — the mounting dimensions alone rule out a different model.

Road Approval

Road approval: a German ABE covers this part on the Yamaha FZ8. Fit it, keep the certificate with the vehicle papers, and nothing further is needed.
