DescriptionThe whole story▼
A café racer is designed for the open road, but many Vitpilen 401s spend a good part of their lives in town, where the left hand works harder than anywhere else. With the Vitpilen's low handlebar, the left wrist is angled forward, and holding a clutch lever at the friction point for minutes at a time can become uncomfortable. The Accossato ESK390 is a clutch lever for the Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 of 2018 to 2020, machined from aluminium, fitted at the original clutch mounting and adjustable in reach.
Key Features
- Clutch lever for the Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, 2018 to 2020
- Fits the original clutch mounting
- Adjustable distance to the grip
- Standard blade about 138 mm; short and long in selected colours
- Milled from solid aluminium and anodised
- Black hub, blade in one of seven colours
- Fixed blade without a folding joint
- No German ABE documented; sold for track use
Construction and Material Quality
The surfaces of the ESK390 are cut, not moulded. Accossato shapes the lever from a solid aluminium blank on CNC machines, which leaves sharp, even contours on the blade and precise features in the hub, namely the pivot bore and the seat of the reach adjuster. Anodising then adds the colour, black on the hub and your choice on the blade. As a fixed lever, the ESK390 has no hinge, and its blade is a single rigid piece that transmits every movement of your fingers directly to the clutch.
A Café Racer in Everyday Traffic
In stop-and-go traffic, the clutch hand repeats the same cycle over and over: pull in, hold, let out to the friction point, creep, pull in again. On an upright bike the wrist stays straight through all of it. On the Vitpilen 401, the low bar angles the wrist forward, and the fingers pull from a less comfortable position. Two small changes make a real difference. First, set the reach so that the blade sits close enough for the fingers not to stretch forward, which would bend the wrist even further. Second, use two fingers instead of four for the creeping part, so that the palm and thumb keep a relaxed hold on the grip. When the queue stops for more than a few seconds, select neutral and let the hand rest. The same lever setting that helps in traffic also makes quick downshifts on a winding road easier.
Fitment and Compatibility
The ESK390 appears in Accossato's catalogue for the Vitpilen 401 across 2018, 2019 and 2020 and goes onto the clutch mounting Husqvarna fitted, in place of the stock lever. For the right hand, the EDF039 brake lever is listed for the same model years and comes in the same colours, so the café racer's cockpit can be finished as a pair.
